This bachelor thesis describes the development of a template generation algorithm based on structured product data that are modeled in the organic product catalog Goliath. Goliath was developed during several projects at Otto-von-Guericke University, Magdeburg. The suggested algorithm is an extension for the existing catalog implementation. It will introduce several analysis steps which explore structural as well as semantic aspects and create possibilities to group products based on their semantic similarity. After this, the work defines a format for product description templates and also shows how to extract those by using Greedy algorithms. The templates can be used to simplify product creation for the product creator. Finally, the thesis combines all steps to an overall template generation process and states recommendations for the use of this process in a distributed environment.

Entropy Guided Transformation Learning: Algorithms and Applications (ETL) presents a machine learning algorithm for classification tasks. ETL generalizes Transformation Based Learning (TBL) by solving the TBL bottleneck: the construction of good template sets. ETL automatically generates templates using Decision Tree decomposition. The authors describe ETL Committee, an ensemble method that uses ETL as the base learner. Experimental results show that ETL Committee improves the effectiveness of ETL classifiers. The application of ETL is presented to four Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks: part-of-speech tagging, phrase chunking, named entity recognition and semantic role labeling. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that ETL is an effective way to learn accurate transformation rules, and shows better results than TBL with handcrafted templates for the four tasks. By avoiding the use of handcrafted templates, ETL enables the use of transformation rules to a greater range of tasks.Suitable for both advanced undergraduate and graduate courses, Entropy Guided Transformation Learning: Algorithms and Applications provides a comprehensive introduction to ETL and its NLP applications.

We explore how Virtual Research Environments based on Semantic Web technologies support research interactions with RDF data in various stages of corpus-based analysis, analyze the Web of Data in terms of human readability, derive labels from variables in SPARQL queries, apply Natural Language Generation to improve user interfaces to the Web of Data by verbalizing SPARQL queries and RDF graphs, and present a method to automatically induce RDF graph verbalization templates via distant supervision.

Mappings in the Web of Data

The Linking Open Data (LOD) initiative has motivated numerous data providers to expose and interlink their data on the Web. But since different data providers often use different vocabularies for describing related resources, applications that consume data from the Web must first reconcile the structural and semantic heterogeneities among the data sets. As a possible solution for the representation, execution, and maintenance of mappings in the context of LOD, we propose a Web-based technique for establishing metadata interoperability. It allows for the declaration of mapping relationships between incompatible vocabularies and provides mapping features that go beyond those of existing Semantic Web languages. Further, it allows us to compile mapping specifications into executable SPARQL templates for integrating metadata from heterogeneous endpoints at run-time. With a reference implementation and a case study, we demonstrate the applicability of our proposed solution.

English Phrasal Verbs in Ontological Semantics

The purpose of the present study is to describe and analyze the acquisition of English Phrasal Verbs into the Knowledge Base Acquisition Editor, a Natural Language Processing database based on the framework of the ontological semantics theory. The present study is an account for both structural and semantic diversity of phrasal verbs. By classifying phrasal verbs into subgroups according to their meaning and then distributing them among four basic templates with respect to their composition and permissible orders within the phrasal group, the study suggests a methodology for covering a wide variety of meanings and argues for listing not only non-compositional, but also literal metaphorically extended senses. The results of the acquisition are considered in the light of the sense disambiguation problem in computational semantics.
